Seniors Weekly Swimming Program, Thanks to Best Western Plus
Wendy Larsen, the Community Resource Centre’s Senior Coordinator is very passionate about her career and it shows in her community activities and programming.
Whether it is Chair Yoga, B-I-N-G-O, swimming, music-jam sessions or building a gazebo, she is focused on keeping seniors smiling, active and healthy.
What started as a bi-weekly event quickly evolved into a weekly event, it was enjoyed so much by the seniors in our community.
The Best Western Plus hotel offered free swimming, exclusively for the seniors 55 years +.
Organized by Mrs. Larsen, she offers seniors aqua-sizes for the first part of the two hour session, instructed by lifeguard Leanna Iddings and then free swim follows, plus the opportunity to use the sauna and exercise equipment.
“The seniors are vibrant and are a great group to work with. They are re-energized and have an amazing time,” said Mrs. Larsen.
When questioned on how the swimming makes them feel, the seniors agreed and giggled they felt like teenagers all over again, they all really look forward to the pool and keeping their bodies healthy and active.
“I love it!” said one of the participants, Kate Cooke. “I am busy four days a week.”
Attendance varies for the drop in program, but as many as 20 seniors are on the list and a core group regularly attend. There is a mixture of both men and women. To many of them, this is their social outing and interaction with others, which is key, especially in the winter months, for mental and physical wellness.
They are all very appreciative of the free access for the facility.
“We can’t thank Best Western Plus enough for allowing us to use the pool,” said Cooke.
In the past, bus trips were organized to travel to Whitecourt to use the pool there, but that was not cost effective for our seniors and attendance was low.
On behalf of the Town of Fox Creek, Mayor Jim Ahn presented the Best Western Plus manager, Tammy MacDougall a certification of appreciation on March 7th.
“Thank you for offering the free program for our seniors, it is greatly appreciated!” said Mayor Ahn.
