Troy and Sarah DeCiccio from Fox Creek teamed up once again with Joe and Sam Vrolson from Whitecourt to participate in the Northern Alberta Mixed Curling play downs. This year the event was held at the Leduc Curling Club from Feb. 27 – March 1st.

The DeCiccio team was sponsored by Marnevic Construction Ltd. in Fox Creek. Troy was the skip of the team, Sarah played third, second was played by Joe and lead was played by Sam. The same team won the entire event last year and advanced to Provincials.

“This year we were hoping to qualify to go to Provincials again,” said Sarah.

Only three teams were able to advance to Provincials. There were 15 teams this year competing.

Their results were:

  • 7-5 loss in 7 ends versus Doug Zingel of Lloydminister
  • 9-4 loss in 8 ends versus Alex Grams of Edmonton
  • 5-4 win against Jeremy Hodges from Edmonton, in an extra end game
  • 6-5 loss in 8 ends versus Glen Hansen of Hinton

“We still had a great experience; it just wasn’t the results we were expecting. To go undefeated last year to not even qualifying was a little disappointing,” said Sarah.

“It was also a great learning experience in the sense we were not letting loose and having fun our first couple games because we had such high expectations of ourselves. The second we finally decided to have fun and let loose we curled to our potential,” she explained.

The DeCiccio team has decided to compete again next year.

“We have a blast competing and we meet such amazing people and get to curl at some amazing clubs. Our hope is that the junior curlers from our club get a taste of the competitive scene. It really is a great experience! We hope more people we take an interest in it to keep our club alive,” said Sarah.
