Following a school athletics meeting Sept. 25th, it was brought to the parent’s attention the dilemma of having no qualified bus drivers in town.
We need a bus driver(s)!
There is a bus for the school to use, however we have no qualified drivers to drive the buses. This causes the fees for our youths to attend out of town sport games to increase dramatically.
In addition, there was a lack of involvement for the both the junior and senior high boys volleyball teams, which would have help to lessen the costs of traveling. There are only junior and senior high girls’ volleyball teams this year.
$1.55 per km is the rate charged for the bus driver to come from Valleyview. This adds up quickly when league games consist of traveling to Mayerthorpe, Whitecourt, Valleyview and potential tournaments in other communities.
Currently junior players are looking at $100 per out of town game and seniors, approximately $250 per out of town game.
Now parents can and are willing to drive, however this also involves plenty of paperwork, criminal record checks, driver’s abstract, proper insurance, etc.
There is also the lack of school spirit and the camaraderie between coach and players when they do not travel together on a bus. Many of us know the best memories created are on the road trips together to attend games, field trips, etc.
The Fox Creek School is willing to pay all of the costs to train local bus drivers.
The youths are prepared to fundraise to cover the costs, but that still leaves the school without a bus driver. Their first out of town game is Oct. 7th. Principal Mr. Rozario assured the parents, the school would cover the costs of the first out of town game to allow time to recruit a busdriver and fundraise.
If you know anyone who is willing to step up to help or become a bus driver, there are many youths, parents, coaches, etc. that would greatly appreciate the efforts.
