Over the last few weeks there have been many reports of a telemarketing scheme involving local phone numbers.
Calls from marketers identifying themselves as employees of Expedia, Airmiles or West Jet have local residents annoyed and confused. The number listed on their call display all begin with the local area code and Fox Creek digits; 780-622. These calls are not limited to land lines, mobile customers have been receiving calls as well.
Through social media connections it has been discovered that most of these numbers are out of service numbers. There are a few phone numbers reported that are in service and are local business numbers including one listed from the Government of Alberta.
After talking with the companies allegedly being represented by these phone calls, it has been confirmed that these calls are not originating from Expedia, Airmiles or West Jet. It is a scam trying to procure your personal information.
Once Telus was made aware of these calls, they request that people call (1-866-493-3414) or email (email@example.com) their Wire Line Toll Fraud Department.
You may also add your number(s) to the National Do Not Call List. Even if your telephone number is on the National DNCL, you may still receive fraudulent telemarketing calls. That’s why it’s important to always be on your guard.
If you receive a call that you think may be fraudulent, contact your local police or The Canadian Anti Fraud Center (1-888-495-8501), a national anti-fraud service jointly operated by the RCMP, the Ontario Provincial Police, and the Competition Bureau.
