Flag Football Tournament

| September 28, 2012
A group of 26 kids; one grade six team and two teams from grade 7 and grade 8 are participating in the G.C.A.A .(Game Country Athletic Association) Flag Football tournament Sept. 29.

Coach, assistant principal Dwayne Mytrunec explained the sport is a very short season. Flag football ends after the tournament due to prior commitments, busy schedules, hockey starting and lack of participants. Unfortunately there was not enough numbers for a grade 9 team.

Fox Creek School students will be competing against teams from Whitecourt, Sangudo and Mayerthorpe.

Flag Football is a non-contact game that promotes skill development, cardio training and mental strategy.

Youths have been practicing in the school football field since the second week of school for this weekend’s tournament.

Flag football is similar to touch football in that they both are a non-physical approach to the game of football. Instead of tackling your opponents, you pull a flag that’s attached to the other player’s belt.

The kids enjoy the fun inexpensive sport, that promotes life skills; such as cooperation, self-discipline and sportsmanlike conduct, self-confidence and improves self-image. One of the great advantages of flag football is that it can be played on any open field or gym.
