Municipal Library News

| June 21, 2012

As school activities wind down, students are writing tests, having pool parties, cleaning out lockers and generally getting in the mood for two months away from school, the library does a sort of wind down too.

We finish up school things and gear up for our Summer Reading Program which is for children aged 6 – 8.  It will run on Wednesdays at noon (12:00 to 1:00.  ).

Preregistration is required so stop by the library for more information and to fill out the forms please.  Our theme this year is “Imagine” and is a cooperative effort of libraries across Canada.  Children can expect stories and related activities as well as lots of giveaways throughout the summer.

The library will be operating at reduced hours over the summer as follows:

Tuesdays             6 – 9 pm

Wednesdays      1 – 4 pm

Thursdays            6 – 9 pm

The library is located in the school just through the main doors and down the hallway a few steps.

A suggestion for summer, if you are a reader, or even if you are not, you may be interested in the free downloadable eBooks that are available to library patrons.  All you need is your library barcode, password and the use of the internet.  Go to www.tracpac.ab.ca and you will find Overdrive and Freading, both free eBook sources with thousands of titles available.  You don’t even need to have an eReader as you can read them on your computer screen or other digital device.

In the past year we have added 2030 items to our library, including DVDs, magazines, and of course books!  Come in and see our selection.  If you need something that we don’t have chances are good that we can get it for you from another library in the province.

Any idea how many items our library checks out to Fox Creek patrons each month?

We average 1579 books monthly during the school year.   You might find it interesting that libraries throughout the province lend a tremendous number of books each year.  Our library lent out 2502 books to other libraries since last June and borrowed 1167 books from other libraries for Fox Creek patrons.  Daily a government courier bag leaves our library delivering requests or returning books our patrons have used.

Starting at the end of September and through until spring, our librarian will run a Time for Tots program Wednesday mornings for children ages three and four.  We will start taking registrations for that soon.

Have a wonderful summer everyone and along with your working, playing, fishing, adventuring, and holidaying, we hope you continue to enjoy READING!

- Librarian Leslie Ann Sharkey
