Fraud by Mail Alert

| June 19, 2012

The Fox Creek RCMP want to bring the public’s attention to a Fraudulent check scam that is currently being sent to people in the mail.

Recently a member of the public in Fox Creek received a letter from a company calling themselves “Rogers – Rogers Group of Companies” (not the same as the legitimate business of Rogers Wireless) although the logo is very similar.

The letter asks you to be a secret shopper and after you are done the work to cash the enclosed check (around $3998.00). When you cash the check you then take your portion and send the remaining amount, $3000.00 to two other people through Western Union. The check will not clear at the bank and you will be out the amount of money.

It is very uncommon to be sent a random check from someone or a business whom you have never had contact with in the past. Also you should always be concerned when asked to cash a check and then forward money to someone else.

If you receive suspicious mail you are encourage to attend your local RCMP or call the Police station, 780-622-3580 to report the incident. You may also contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Center at 1-888-495-8501 or info@antifraudcentre.ca .
